The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a formal apology to Mr. Akintola Makinde who filed a lawsuit against the agency over maltreatment.
Mr Akintola Makinde, Esq, has accused the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) of seizing his car and wrongfully prosecuting him in the Special Offences (Mobile) Court of Lagos State.
According to a notice from his legal representatives, Shola Bojuwoye and Olajide Salami, Makinde’s vehicle malfunctioned on Osborne Road, Ikoyi.
Subsequently, LASTMA officers, Mr Bamidele Tijani, impounded the vehicle and towed it to their office, alleging that Makinde had neglected to maintain his car properly.
The case against Makinde was however dismissed, and he was found not guilty.
He has expressed that the incident has inflicted significant psychological distress, public humiliation, and damage to his reputation.
Makinde also demanded that LASTMA issue a formal apology and discipline the officers involved within a month, saying should they fail to comply, he would pursue legal action seeking Twenty Million Naira in exemplary damages among other remedies.
As a consequence of the suit filed, the LASTMA, in a letter dated June 21, 2024, however, acknowledged the mistreatment of Mr Makinde by one of its employees, Mr Bamidele Tijani, expressing regret for the inconvenience and harm caused.
The letter, signed by the agency’s Director of Legal Services, S. S. Soyombo, assured Mr. Makinde that steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
“The actions of the employee are deeply regretted. It was not the intention of the Authority to cause you any harm or inconvenience,” the letter stated.
The agency expressed hope for a resolution and the ability to move forward from the incident.
