The Alumni Association of Ekiti State Government College, (formerly Unity Secondary School) Ado-Ekiti has called on the state government to stop land grabbers and some educational institutes who have encroached on the school land as well as pulled down some buildings within the school premises.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti at the biannual reunion of the Alumni Association, the president of the alumni association, Mr. Kayode Fashubaa lamented the high rate of encroachment of the school land and properties by some land grabbers as well as some federal government-owned institutions located around the school premises.
Fashubaa said the Alumni Association would use all legal means to prevent further encroachment of the school land; saying that such acts of encroachment cannot be done to some other prominent schools in the State.
He said the government must wade into the matter to protect students of the school who are all living in the school compound; adding that the activities of the land grabbers are already making the school prone to external aggression.
The president who disclosed that some hostels and staff quarters had been demolished by unknown individuals who converted the property into their residential apartment appealed to the state government to urgently begin the perimeter fencing of the school to protect the students.
"The alumni body is not happy with the way our school is being balkanized. What we are experiencing now cannot be done to a school like Christ School. Our land is being encroached by land grabbers and sold to people. The school lecture theatres, fine arts studio, and technical laboratories, among other facilities, have been taken over by unknown individuals. We want to appeal to the state government to wade into this matter urgently since the school is owned by the state government. Whoever needs land should go elsewhere and stop making the students insecure”, he said.

Fashubaa reiterated his commitment to lead an alumni association that would work tirelessly for the progress of the school and continue to ensure good partnerships with the government for the benefit of the school.
He added that the encroachment has hindered some of the plans of the alumni body for the provision of some structures within the school.
Responding, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Bimpe Aderiye who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of, the Teaching Service Commission, Mr. Michael Omolayo, appreciated the Alumni Association for the facilities they provided for the school; describing them to be strategic at the time the government is championing safe space for teaching and learning.
While describing the Alumni Association as a pacesetter, she encouraged the students not to derail from the excellent performance the school is known for.
She assured that the ministry would look into all matters raised by the association.
The project commissioned by the alumni association during the reunion includes 30 units of Solar panel street lights donated by 1993 set, a befitting gate house facilitated by 1999, and renovation and face lifting of the school administrative block as well as the alumni secretariat.
The reunion which featured a symposium titled Raising a New Generation of Leaders from Here to the World availed the Alumni the opportunity to share their experience with the students, a lunch with the principal, free medical outreach, an award ceremony, and dinner.
Election into different positions in the alumni was also held at the reunion programme, with Mr. Kayode Fashubaa and 'Tope Adigun returning as President and Government- Student liaison officer respectively for another two-year tenure.
Others are Akanle Abiodun (Vice President), Ayodele Ajofoyinbo (Media and Publicity Secretary), Miss Michael Elizabeth (Welfare Director), Ojo Abayomi Ayodeji (Social Director), Temilola Goerge (General Secretary), and Owoeye Ibironke (Financial Secretary).
