The Ekiti State players who represented the State at the just concluded South West Zonal qualification series of the National Under-17 Cricket Championship held in Ibadan, Oyo State have swept most of the awards at the tournament.
The General Manager of the State Sports Council, Mr Kunle Adeyemi Adeyemi who made this known in Ado Ekiti, stated that three players from the team won various awards to show their level of performance at the event.
Mr Adeyemi said that the team dubbed the “Giant Slayers” in the last edition had made the State proud by showing grit and commitment despite being runners-up.
Giving a breakdown of the awards, he said that Ejim Blesssing won both the Best Bowler and the Most Valuable Player awards; Olukayode Ayomiposi won the Best Batter award while Ekundayo Yinka won the Best Fielder award of the tournament.
Mr Adeyemi mentioned that the team won the last edition and even though they could only manage a second place, this year, he was still proud of the team and they can “hold their heads high” as he believes there is definitely more to come from the young group of players.
The GM advised the team to put in a better effort and train harder to ensure better performances in future outings.
“Winning a silver medal is not bad but we know the ability of this team and we know they can do better. They won the last edition; even though they could only come second this time around, we are sure they can go a step further in the next edition.”
Mr Adeyemi lauded the Coach, Mr Olasunkanmi Ayangbemi for the job done so far but also admonished the team to re-strategize and prepare for future tournaments.
The team defeated their counterparts from Ogun, Osun and Lagos States before succumbing to their Oyo State counterpart in the final.
